Transmission instruments are designed to measure clear materials such as plastic films glass and liquids. The light source illuminates the sample, which acts like a colored filter, the light passes through the sample and the color analyzer receives the signal on the other side of the sample. The filtered light is converted to electrical responses across the visual spectrum, and the data calculated by a conversion device and transmitted to the computer. Analytical spectrophotometers used in chemical spectral analysis are designed this way. Transmission colorimeters use broad band filters that are designed to emulate the red, green, blue response similar to the cone cells of the human eye. Transmission spectrophotometers convert the spectral data to the red, green, blue response using the same mathematical models as reflectance color spectrophotometers.

Manufacturers' of glass, clear plastics, and clear liquids such as beverages, soaps & oils, cosmetics and some textile dyers use transmission measurements for color testing. Transmission color mixing prediction by Beer's Law can predict new colors by additive mixing. Batch correction and work off of surplus materials and most of the computer routines used in opaque colored materials can also be done with transmission color data.
