Standard reflection color instruments began with 0/45 or 45/0 instruments. The geometry is similar to the way we naturally view a sample. The 45-degree viewing angle was selected since it follows our natural tendency to judge the color of materials by moving the sample to ignore the gloss from the surface of a material. These instruments are excellent for color quality control of most painted, plastic and printed surfaces. They do not measure bright shiny surfaces with a mirror surface as well as a sphere instrument; they are also not as good in measuring highly textured surfaces such as heavy woven fabrics. They can be used for color mixing prediction, especially if you want the color mixed to have the color and appearance of the color measured. 45/0 instruments have become popular for Quality Control due to their low cost, correlation to color and appearance, lower maintenance and ruggedness. They have become especially popular in the design of practical portable color instruments.
